LotRO: Fellowship Walk 2012
It’s that time again!!
A Casual Stroll to Mordor is hosting the Fellowship Walk for Child’s Play again. This is the third year they’ve done this and I am so glad I can be a part of it again this year, barring any computer issues that is. (/fingers crossed!) Child’s Play is an organization with a mission to donate toys and games to children the world over who are sick and having to endure long hospital stays. Here’s their mission statement:
Child’s Play seeks to improve the lives of children in hospitals around the world through the kindness and generosity of the video game industry and the power of play.
When games give back, it makes a difference!
Is that not totally awesome? Here’s a link to testimonials on the Child’s Play website. If you’re wondering how beneficial and important this charity is, read what some of the kids who’ve received games from Child’s Play have to say about it. I can’t imagine being stuck in the hospital as a kid, unable to go to school or see my friends, play basketball in the back yard, go to the park, run with my dog, … These kids have to deal with so very much due to their illnesses and injuries. Playing a game, especially a two-player console game, for instance, with a buddy isn’t just fun, it takes their minds off their situation and brings them joy, something to smile about, look forward to. What makes this even more amazing is that they are able to donate these games because gamers around the world come together and make it happen through donations every year.
Goldenstar and Merric at A Casual Stroll to Mordor have turned this fund-raising into an epic series of events that take place on the Landroval server. They have a goal chart and as the community donates (100% of the donations go straight to Child’s Play!) and reach new goals, we get together in game and walk, following the path Frodo took to Rivendell. It’s a lot of fun seeing so many folks come out and fellowship together and, to be honest, very heart warming. I mean, it just feels great to see everyone supporting this incredible cause. Last year the goal was to raise $5000.00 for Child’s Play. The community went above and beyond that goal so much they extended the walk and instead of finishing at the Elrond’s home in Rivendell, we marched all the way to the Walls of Moria!
The community really comes together for the Fellowship Walk. There are kins on the Landroval server who are aware that we have low-level characters walking with us and have made it their priority to protect those low levels by riding with and ahead of the group, killing off any mobs that may threaten us as we march on. If you’ve never had the chance to participate and are curious what it’s like, go roll a character on Landroval. You just need to get out of the starter instance to be able to come out and join in. This is how I came to call Landroval my ‘home’ server. I was playing on Elendilmir and rolled Ranni the Hunter just for this event. I fell in love with the community here and have been here for a year now. But you don’t have to do that, you can just come out for special events like this one. It’s well worth the time and, as I’ve said earlier, it’s just an amazing experience seeing all these people joining together for a common goal that reaches far beyond the borders of our beloved Middle Earth.
A Casual Stroll to Mordor has giveaways you can enter by donating (think that starts with a $20 donation) and are running special auctions for in game services (and fun!) this year. A lot of folks have come up with some pretty neat ideas for the auctions and it’s adding a whole new dimension to the event. One of the auctions is for a night playing with Goldenstar’s Dum group. Another I saw was to skirmish with Pineleaf, the master of skirmishes.
The Fellowship Walk starts tomorrow, Sunday September 23rd at 2pm server time (Eastern time). As of right now we will be starting at Bag End and walking to Hobbiton. If you can come out, you really should. It’s a lot of fun and the cause here, getting games to sick children in hospitals around the world, is so important. You can make donations through the Fellowship Walk widget on A Casual Stroll to Mordor’s site. Any donation is welcomed and will be put to a great use!
